I quite like my last name as well.
My first name, don't get me started on how much I loathe being called by it.
The name sucks and I find it really irritating.
Every time someone mentions it, it takes away a little peice of me.

As for my middle name, just forget it, the only person on this planet with a worse middle name than me is my brother......hahaha...

My current name means "sweet" in Arabic - was changed by my parents because my older siblings have names starting with S - yes, dumb reason I know. so at age 14 it was legally changed to Shiraz when I attended (yet another) new school.

Earlier my name was Nadeem, which translated into "friend" in Arabic - both names suit me but I liked my former one better. Cant be arsed to go through the hassle of reverting it.

My last name is pretty common though - and I like the sound of it. It wallows in regality.

Nadeem is the name we would have called one of our little girls if she was a boy, but I miscarried her anyway.

And I was born in the Aga Khan hospital.......I think your name is lovely.

Btw, how did you feel about your name change at that age, 14? Did it have psychological implications for you ("who am I?") Was it easy to suddenly be called something else?

It didn't really bother me as much as it should have. Due to my dad's job at the bank we were transferred around a lot so in 12 years of education I changed about 8 schools.

besides, I didnt think it was much of a deal. I dont like fussing over things too much.

My name is not who I am. I would happily change it.
But, I know people who feel that their name somehow represents themselves, and wont for instance take their husband's name for fear of losing something of themself.

I just wondered if you adapted easily to be called a new name? Did you not answer at first? I think I would be a bit confused, just for that reason.

Oh no, at home I have a nickname and they changed it during a summer vacation so I got partially used to it by the time I re joined school.

Personally, I didn't find it disrespectful at all that my parents decided to change my name. Like Lilac said, my name doesnt make me, I make my name.

I wouldnt find it disrespectful because they ARE my parents regardless of what I feel about it, and the reason i've experienced life is because they brought me to this world.

I think it's safe to say should they want to choose a name for me and then change it - up to them. This was before I became an adult, mind you.

Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing OK!

Umm, no I dont think it is disrespectful to want to change my name at all. My mother has always hated her names for instance and said she would never speak to me ever again if I ever inflicted them on any daughters I had.
I think it is such a common thang for a person to not like the name that was chosen for them - but then, as a Catholic, we get to choose a middle name at Confirmation, and are often called that thereafter......

Whenever anyone calls me Jonathon, I do get slightly pissed off, and I immediately think they are calling me that to wind me up....

I have to live with that name , I can't stand it.

I have always been called Macky by friends and even my brother calls me that.
90% of the people I know don't even know my first name, and some of them have known me for nearly 15 years......
