to lose a belly, you defo have to cut back on eating fats a bit, try to stay off of simple carbohydrates, and if your eating alot of complex carbohydrates, you might want to cut them back a bit as any carbs that dont get used as energy will get stored as body fat, dont eat anything shortly before bed, it will only get turned to body fat during the night. exercise + healthy eating = trim and energetic body. cardio, although very boring at times, is essential, cycle, get yourself a mountain bike, get out and about on it, and burn fat at the same time. give it 3 months you will see the difference!

Handymani and Aradon are correct.

You need to do cardiovascular exercise, i.e. one that makes your heart beat faster than normal and gets you out of breath.

Weights build and/or tone muscle, but you can't see the muscle if it's covered in fat.

Read a bit about carbs, cut down on the simple carbs and moderate the complex ones too, and definitely reduce fat intake, as Handymani said.

Basically, you need to burn more energy than you consume. So consume less (that doesn't mean go hungry or eat boring food) or burn more, ideally both.

I 100% agree with MissMe.

I find the long lists of platitudes on this site quite irritating.

The honesty in this thread is refreshing.

correct, striking the balance is where nearly everyone goes wrong. I know i haven't got my diet side of things ironed out yet but basically if you dont eat enough then your body wont be able to build any muscle, plus lack of nutrients will make it go into starvation mode, its a fact that this can be triggered after just one day of not eating correctly.

But then again if you eat too much, then you wont be able to burn it off and the excess energy will be stored away as fat.

It's a very delicate balance and one that is best found by talking with your doctor.

I do it by eating plenty of "healthy" foods in a wide variety and laying off the bad stuff.

So - fish, chicken (without the skin), a wide range of vegetables including many pulses (they keep you feeling "full" for longer and release their energy more gradually) and fruit and nuts and modest amounts of good oils.

Minimal bread, rice, pasta, potatoes, cheese/butter/dairy, red meat and no refined sugar, no frying, no added salt or processed foods at all.

Although I do sometimes treat myself to a pizza or whatever I fancy, so I don't feel I'm denying myself things I love.

Thank you Scott, I'm not afraid to speak my mind even if it goes against what everyone else is saying Smile

That's definitely a good attitude.

I don't hold the platitudes against people ALL the time - I understand that some people in here air their concerns in the hope that someone will support them. I'm ugly. No, you're gorgeous. I'll never meet anyone. Sure you will. Men don't like fat women. I like curvy women. That kinda stuff.

Me? I'd rather take the negatives on the chin and improve what can be improved. I call it realism.

Well going by yours and Missme's attitude, I should then belive what I was brought up to believe. I am ugly and no-one would look twice at me. Nobody would ever want to love me or marry me 'cos I'm not worth it and too ugly/fat.

It's the so-called 'platitudes' of friends and those that have loved me that have made me realise the truth... that I'm not ugly and that people won't see me purely for what's on the outside. Platitudes have there place.

And on a different note totally, this thread has made me realise that my weight is down to 2 main things; lack of excercise (which I knew anyway Embarassed ) and not eating enough.

I knew that not eating enough triggers something that makes the body believe it is starving etc, but hadn't realised it kicked in within 24 hours! I thought it could take weeks/months for that to happen.. oh well, a lesson learnt, and I shall be taking steps to remedy it Very Happy

Platitudes may have their place sometimes, but not on this thread as I pointed out several posts ago Rolling Eyes

yeah tracy the body is a very delicate chemical plant, it notices if just one meal is out of place, this is why we can last for ages without food, because as soon as we stop eating the body automatically switches to its reserves, which most people have plenty of.

So maintaining a healthy diet, and indeed eating little and often is the best solution, as this helps increase the bodies metabolism by constantly keeping it working Very Happy

Really?

In my experience, you can tell an attractive person who thinks they're unattractive the truth as much as you like, they just don't believe it.

The realisation of the truth, if it comes at all, comes from inside, not outside.

But anyway, as I said, I'm not totally against platitudes, I can see why some people want them.

I just don't want them. I prefer to accept my shortcomings and make the best of what I've got.
