I think that brown shoes are more suitable for throwing at George W. Bush than wearing, myself.

I only wear brown, 'cos I couldn't get black in the style I wanted.... but they're my heavy duty casuals

Every colour has a place and a use. Some are just safer (more boring?) than others - black, brown, cream and grey being in this category. Be aware of contrast, harmony and dominance. Try pulling off using tangerine, cyan or lime. (See Apple for tips)

This probably needs a poll of its own

My human companion would be drooling over those Duffs. Although the baby blue trim might not be to his taste. Brown ‘trainers’ have come a long way over the past few years. My own canine opinion is that it depends on how much of a ‘trainer’ the shoe is – Mr Darkhorse has a wonderful collection of brown surfer and skate shoes (Reef, Duffs, Vans etc), and although they fall loosely into the trainer category, such shoes do fulfil many criteria of a more casual smart shoe, and go well with his general fashion style (cargo pants, t shirts, fleece tops, etc).

Admittedly, I was a little horrified when he came from TK Maxx one day with a white & blue pair of Duffs (considering his age), but even those have lost their original distasteful glare and suit his personal style. When all is said and done, a piece of clothing of pair of shoes that might not suit one person (or their personal taste in clothing) might very well suit another.

Why, only this morning Mr Darkhorse took me for a walk, wearing a brown pair of Reef shoes and I thought he looked rather dashing – those shoes, and his old light brown Duffs also go very well with his old grey cargo pants). In fact, much to the probable horror of many here, this morning he wore the brown shoes with distressed black/grey organic jeans.

Incidentally, Miss Cork Legs has a fine selection of shoes herself, very fashionable and colourful Art and Fly shoes & boots to name but 2 brands, and if she thought brown ‘trainer’ type shoes were naff, she certainly wouldn’t be seen dead walking around with Mr Darkhorse!

As someone who actually wears Duffs, I think your comment is a bit personal. I’m guessing that you wouldn’t date someone who embraced a skater/surfer fashion and style then? Then again, they would probably find you rather frumpy and outdated too. Unfortunately, those who fancy themselves as a bit of a fashion and beauty expert are often quite narrow-minded about other people’s sense of ‘being’, and are often single-minded, as borne out by the ‘disgusting’ comment. I don’t particularly like that model all that much myself, but they might very well appeal to someone else’s sense of style and fashion.

Considering your numerous other (often uninvited and rather narrow-minded) fashion and beauty tips scattered across the forum, you’d think you’d be sensible enough to make neutral fashion tips, rather than base things on your own sense of style. Whether you think it ‘disgusting’ or not, the skater/surfer style is as valid as the grandma’s tent dresses and cardigans that you favour.

No, I wouldn't wear trainers on a night out. Haven't got any Duff trainers yet, probably owing to the fact I hadn't heard of them until misscorklegs mentioned them

The sued boots have crepe type trainer soles and are very comfortable, they look quite smart though. Cant say the ladies where chucking themselves at me because of them, but I think shoes are the most important garment when attracting women in real life. Have to have nice clean smart shoes Very Happy

Blimey, its just clothes and peoples opinions on them, not the people who wear them!

Why take that personally? i couldn't give a marry if somebody on here didn't like something i wore, because i aint wearing it for them, i am wearing it for myself.

I agree. Live and let live. People have been kicked to death in a park because of the way they dress.

I would have to throw away most of my clothes and shoes if I wore what other people thought I should wear.

I was mainly making a point about individual style and acceptance thereof, whilst relating it to something valid that had been said, by pointing out to the poster that by making a strong off-hand comment like that, that her own fashion sense might be questioned by others.

Good lord, no! I mean that stating something like ‘disgusting’ in such an emphatic and categorical way was personal, as in ‘a personal view’. For example, that particular pair of shoes is not disgusting (in fact they are quite fashionable amongst the people who wear such shoes), but one is entitled to air a view that they think they are disgusting; but that doesn’t make them disgusting. In the same way that someone might think that someone’s clothes are frumpy and old-fashioned – that doesn’t make them so, it is just an opinion.

Although the original topic was to help jeggae decide upon a NYE ‘outfit’, there are merits to discussing related aspects too. I actually found some of the posts in this thread quite revealing about some people, and their attitudes towards what other people wear.

And, based purely on comments in this thread alone, there are at least 3 people I wouldn’t ask for a date. And based on my comments, there are probably a lot more than 3 who wouldn’t consider me for a potential date.

Come to think of it, this topic is also vaguely related to general dating. It is easy to click with someone online, but if you turn up to a date wearing something the other person doesn’t like (such as brown trainers or white socks!), does one automatically dismiss the thought of a second date based on what shoes someone is wearing? Or dress? Or excessive make-up? Or whatever.
