I always recommend The Postal Service- they're a few years old and haven't had anything new out, but I think they're great. Try Such Great Heights and The District Sleeps Alone Tonight. Its a unique, electronic sound.

Sondre Lerche's Faces Down CD was pretty good. Also Marc Broussard is really excellent -- not exactly alternative but i like him! Also Snow Patrol is really great; they're pretty alternative!

Probably nobody here has heard of them, but for some exceptional booze-drenched seafaring bluegrass, try the self-titled album by "The Devil Makes Three."

Also, everyone I've talked to really likes Gotan Project - the entire album "La Revancha Del Tango" is just great for active or background listening (or dancing tango if you prefer).

For more folky-bluesy stuff, try the following two compilations produced by Ry Cooder: "The Roots of Ry Cooder" (old-timey blues, which means moving closer to '00, but it's more like 1900) and "Buena Vista Social Club" (great traditional Cuban Jazz).

For chick-folk, there is a live one-time album by some famous american female folk singers called "Voices on the Verge: Live in Philadelphia" that has some really nice, fresh (despite being like 1998) tracks on it.

Of course if you want to get into hiphop, I can suggest a few entry-level albums that everyone can enjoy.

If you have trouble finding any of these on your download service, PM me and we can work something out. Cool

Check out Hot Chip for something a bit different, kind of indie elctronica.
Kings of Leon are definetly my favorite band of the moment and have a listen to the Beta Band for some warped psycadelic indie sounds!
