Have a look at 2 threads I started in the music section, and see f they can help.

http://www.flirtbox.net/music/what-new-music-have-you-discovered-recently-.html

http://www.flirtbox.net/music/one-track-to-reach-them-all-.html

Feel free to post your own contributions to both of them, because that will pop the threads up to the top when people look for ones that have been posted to recently Hopefully, that will lead to more people posting their recommendations.

I'm browsing my local smaller music venues at the moment, in search of new bands & songs to listen to get to get a feel for them They're all about £5 to go and see. Maybe there's similar places near you.

OMG .. I just noticed that you're in London. There's going to be shit loads of bands for you to find out about who are cheap to go and see, and probably get a few songs or albums of their work.

Hi mate,

Funny you say that. I'm an Aussie and last night I went and saw an Aussie band called Carus in Shoreditch. Anyway, this awesome awesome acoustic guitarist opened for them... this dude blew me away. You should check him out if your into that kinda stuff. His name is Rob Sawyer. The whole gig cost me 9 pounds. Honestly, one of the best nights all yr!

Londond/england is fantastic for live music...

To be honest I'm not really into any of those... Im a bit sad, I like a lot of folk music. As said up there, I'm an Australian girl so I have Australian music taste (haha... yes bad i know). But yea, I do like stuff like Bloc Party and Bjork is probably my fave.

But I do find i'm stuck in 1997 with my music... I'm still clinging onto artists like Third Eye Blind and Fiona Apple. Thats why i made this post, I gotta get with the 00s hehe.

You've reminded me, Bjork is someone I'd *love* to see performing! I'm going to be checking out where she's playing now.

Someone I'd recommend, because his songs played acoustic are sorta-folk-like is Jamie T. I'm not sure if his recorded stuff is acoustic or not, but live he does a mix of acoustic and playing with a proper band. When I saw him, his Acoustic set was pretty good, but then he brought on a proper band and I was really impressed. He was on a different level, completely, to all 3 of the support acts. I'd assume he'd have better support bands, now, though.

There's a few Aussie bands playing in London, as far as I'm aware. A place in Kilburn above a pub my dad drinks in has a few playing there from time to time, so I remember hearing. It's not surprising, really, seeing as there's so many Aussies, Kiwis & South Africans in London.

i like loads of different types of music ... maybe look at Lynnard Skynnard, you will maybe know them best for singing Sweet Home Alabama, but i like a lot more of their stuff, there is a track called Travelin' Man which is good. The best thing to do is just type the band name in and play about, I was looking for Sweet Home Alabama ages ago and just downloaded more of their stuff. Also another band i seem to have really started to like are a band called Heart - courtesy of my Mum! (Crazy on You, Magic Man ... are a couple that I really like) So there you have a bit of female guitar band with interesting vocals. And then there is always good old Joan Armatrading who apparently is classed as folk but im not quite sure if thats right but then loads of people know who she is as she has been about for ages. If i think of anything else ill post it - everyone think im strange now lol, hope that helps

Han x

Try some Irish Folk. Heres Christy Moore and the Dubliners

Quote:
"The Black Velvet Band" is a traditional Irish folk song concerning the waves of Irish people who were sent to places like Australia for their crimes. This song is about a tradesman who meets a young woman who has stolen an item and passed it on to him (the lyrics of the song vary from place to place). The man then appears in court the next day, charged with stealing the item and is sent to Australia for doing so. This version by Christy and the Dubliners is from 1987

I saw Christy moore at Glastonbury a few years ago. Not my thing normally, by choice, but he was on the pyramid stage before some people I wanted to see so I gave him a shot. I quite liked him. The Dubliners, well, being brought up in an Irish family they were kinda hard to avoid ... as was practically any major band with Irish roots.

Yeah Dave, Christy is a legend. I preferred the Dubliners when Luke Kelly was singing with them. He was the best balladeer ever, whose voice and delivery, could melt entire audiences. Heres one of him singing about producer Phil Coulters child, who is autistic
