I have heard that excuses like that are simply not true, because it is comet that sold it to you and not acer. I don't know for sure, but I think it's right. I mean, how can they take your money and not be able to help when things go wrong. Have you ever bought a pint of milk from a shop, found it's gone off, and been told to contact the dairy ? Or, if it was some bananas that were bad, would you be expected to call the plantation in Colombia to get it sorted out ? That's the logic I would use. You're comet's customer, not acers.
I dunno ... maybe I am talking crap.

thats exactly how i see it Dave, but it dont seem to matter how much money you spend, at the end of the day it was in the small print..........i never saw any feckin small print! der

It is down to Comet as the retailer and agent for Acer. Regardless of 'small print' they still have to conform to the Law, as laid out in the aforementioned 'Sale of Goods Act'. They have already admitted liability by offering to send it away for repair, which they stated will take 10 days, but you consider this to be unreasonable. Remember "...the repair or replacement must be carried out within a reasonable time and without causing significant inconvenience to the consumer."
I'll also bet that the 10 days they state will more likely end up taking much longer.

You're right, it winds me up because retailers try to pull the wool over peoples eyes. Guarantees and warranties are non prejudicial towards your statutory rights, and you have to have value for money for anything you buy, If a manufacturers fault occurs 5-6 years after you bought something, you may get a repair or a replacement, if you paid top money for it. Courts will take into account how much you paid and wear and tear, also how long on average the goods should last. grantees should be an improvement on statutory rights and not a replacement. Small print will not stand up in court either, if the courts think the company has made it small intentionally and it is not prominent.
Also 'sales' and 'half price' do not effect your rights and do not exist in law.

I can't comment on return, repair, and replacement policies, but you shouldn't get too freaked out that your laptop is harbouring deeper unseen severe electronic problems to come because a key fell off.
In my opinion it's not really worth replacing the entire machine--it's an easy fix not worth either company swallowing the entire replacement cost. The 10 (or more) day thing is really annoying and inconvenient, though. I'm sure it's all shipping time, as the actual fix will take about 90 seconds.
