How about Jimmy Carter? Nothing gets a party started like somebody impersonating the 39th President of the USA.

Starsky and Hutch? Although created in 1975, it wasn't until 1976 that we got to see the series..I think you would look great in a black curly wig and strutting your stuff in a 'starsky and hutch cardigan' I know my mum knitted a fair few back in the 70's lol..

Please let us know what you decide to go as..I just love a fancy dress party..

All this is from memory…

I was 19 in 1976, and the 70's were a great decade with a lot going on. Glam Rock was still about but coming to an end, as 'new wave' and Disco were just being born. Punk Rock was probably at its prime, before Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood got their grubby hands on it and ruined it.

It was a bit of a hotchpotch in those days, you'd go to a nightclub and there'd be punks, Rod Stewart and David Bowie lookalikes, the Disco Stu lookalikes and the hippies [spit]. All very colourful Smile

The punks grew out of the 40's scene that was around earlt to mid 70’s, and it was mainly a reaction against spending loads of money on designer clothes, so clothes were individualistic and your own design. People designed their own clothes and looked around charity shops for unusual clothes. Charity shops have a lot to thank 40's style/punk Rock for. Plastic sandals or winkle pickers, leather or plastic trouser, or ripped jeans. Tee shirt ripped with your own design on it preferably rude, Blazer with all sorts of things sewn on it from chains, zips and anything else that made it look odd, and rude words written on them. Not forgetting black bin lines, which were popular with women.

Disco/funk was just starting to come out of the underground clubs and go mainstream. With Platform shoes with 3-4 inch soles, afro's or long hair, flairs, shirts with massive collars [pointed or rounded], either a kipper tie or the top buttons undone and a medallion.

Glam Rock was on the wain, as young people turned to new wave and Disco Music. Dress was similar to Disco but satin clothes with a lot of gold and silver, and loads of glitter in your long hair.

David Bowie and Rod Stewart had a big cult following with young people modelling themselves on them and their respective hairstyles.

Then there were hippies that followed the heavy rock scene..look at Status Quo from the seventies for an idea of what they wore.

darkhorse says "ditto" Laughing

(That's the year I went through my hippie stage (spit), got arrested (for the first time), still had lots of hair, was a handsome young man who would never have needed to use a dating site - even if they had existed back then)

1976 was the year that both Betamax and VHS were released as competing formats for home video systems....(and we know which one won Smile )....you could work that into it somehow....

And how could we forget - It was also the hottest summer in the UK since records began, so make sure you wear your shades.

And...sorry to have to remind you all, but it was the year that the UK won the Eurovision song contest with 'Brotherhood of man' and 'Save your kisses for me'....oh dear....I'm not helping much, am i....
