The day after the smoking ban kicked in I went for a smoke outside work and started coughing my guts up, in true smoker style I smoked the rest of the pack, but so far haven't bought any more. I've got as far as the newsagent, but resisted at the last second and bought a Twix instead.

Goodbye lung cancer, hello obesity and dentist bills.....

Cor, there are a lot of people here giving up smoking.

I'll just keep filling my lungs with crap thanks.

But I'm guessing cold turkey might be the way to go. I was in hospital for a while a couple of years ago and didn't smoke in all the time I was there. First 2 or 3 days seemed to be the worst, but after that it didn't bother me. But the first thing I did when I got out the front door when I left was roll a ciggie. Not much reason for me to give up really. I thought maybe health reasons, but when I went for some tests recently, I appeared to be very fit and healthy (the nurse didn't even realise I was a smoker from the results, and even my oxygen level was almost 100% when they did those tests.

I suppose I might feel differently if I had kids, or had a girlfriend who didn't smoke.

ok I've admitted my puff habbit - that's puff! not poof Razz - in another thread so...

I'd been smoking 25 years, tried a good few times but never actually went a whole day without. Last November but one, had the flu and as hadn't had a flu or even cold for a few years, forgot how bad I get when I carry on smoking - bad cheast cough for weeks! Which is exactly what happened.

So stareed smoking tiny spliffs only - one skinners. And got some padding from a mate - the dried trimmings and male plants of his home-grown. Started making them up one third of each and kept a diary. Over about 10 days I cut them down from around 12 - 15 a day to 4 or 5 a day, and reduced the amount of tobacco down to a single strand or two, then cut the tobacco out completely. Wow! I was off the niccotine for the first time since I was 16! I'd been on two packs of full streangth camel a day or one and a half large packs of drum a week.

I've had one or two spliffs with tobacco in em since but its completely disgusting! I do still get the odd craving, only when next to a mate who's smoking, but all I have to do is remember that I'm not physically addicted any more and also how totally disgusting it would tast!

Job done

Good luck to all of you, its dam worth it in the end!

And here's a thought to help you through the difficult times.

One day you will realise that you haven't even thought about a cigarette for a whole day! And that particular moment will be a very special day indeed, it was for me

That's exactly what a friend of mine's been sayin. I still don't get how you just forget about it (as mobsters would put it - fogget-ba-rit). Whenever I try to quit I feel empty. I know I should get somethin' else to do instead, but few things seem able to be sufficient for the gap left. And each time I say I'm gonna quit tomorrow, I just feel like smokin' my brains out. (once I've made it for like 2 weeks, been goin lower though on my last attempts, 3 days tops cold turkey... On other attempts I just managed to smoke up to 5 ciggies per day when I had like some throat condition which would prevent me from smokin more).

p.s. I'm not really searchin for a piece of advice, unless you know how to permanently ban the cravings. I'm just fessin up. it makes it somewhat better. Anyways I'm tryin to quit every week and I'm sure I'll make it at some point...

I have just recently decided once again to try and stop smoking. I did get Zyban (the pill thing) from the doctor which disagreed with me and gave me very very bad stomach pains. Ive now got a doctors prescription for patches in which i get a months worth for the price of a prescription so maybe could be worth some of you trying to stop to have a little trip to the docs and see what he can do for you
