Apologies if this has been flogged to death but probably worth a refresh after the ban.
Has anyone given up recently? what's best, patches, gum or cold turkey?
I've set a date and i think i'm serious this time. Since the ban though i've found i really enjoy a smoke now when i'm out. Like a treat as i waited a couple of pints to have one Rolling Eyes

I quit last september after smoking 20 a day for over 20 years..you would think I would know better the kind of job I do..but it took something very tragic to make me stop..I tried the pateches for the first 4 days..but then did it cold turkey..

Must say apart from gaining some timber grrrrrrr..I have never felt so healthy..

I didn't set a date..I just woke up one morning and thought that I never wanted to smoke another cigarette..and I haven't

The hardest time for me is when I am out socialising...seem to think of them a lot then..but now the smoking ban is in place I hope I find it a little easier..

GOOD LUCK to all those that do want to try and quit..it really is sheer will power...

from what i read on the subject, not planning to quit and simply going cold turkey is the best way to quit, within 3 days your body normalises all the toxins in your blood and muscles and you are then "free" its a case then of not relapsing

well, i stopped smoking at the beginning of April just like that....(my motivation was i couldn't stand the smell of smoke on myself and my clothes anymore)

whenever i felt like i wanted to smoke i just put a normal chewingum in my mouth and chewed away...after a week caughing and feeling a bit crap, i started to feel much better and now i'm fine...

i suppose it's the strength of the motivation for quitting the secret to stop, whatever else is just a way to keep your mind off the siggies!!!!

Good luck women4me!!!!

Another vote for cold turkey here!

Patches, gum ............whatever placebo you wish to use, you'll need a healthy dollop of self-determination too, so you may as well just give up and not transfer your craving to yet another crutch.

Not sure that many will queue up for the smash your ankle up approach to quitting smoking.

Glad it worked for you though. Very Happy

I was thinkin' bout gettin' myself locked up somewhere (even in my own apartment) for a couple of weeks, in order to quit. My will power in this case =s 0. Sad I love smokin', but I know I gotta quit... Really thinkin' bout those 2 weeks after hearin' your story Foxy. Maybe that's the key for me, eventually.

bliss i really hope u mean just doing the two weeks not injuring yourself to get in the hospital for two weeks to give u the chance to stop, what i would say is tell loads of family and friends so if they see you getting tempted they can divert your attention too i was going mad for the first few days and found diversions really helped

I gave up 2 years ago. Considering how long I had been thinking about quitting but never getting much further than a day (apart from 1 week when I had toncillitis), it was much easier than I thought it would be. You hear crap like it is more addictive than heroin and crack - that is a load of bollocks. I gave up cold turkey and the first 2 weeks were the pretty hard but after that it got fairly easy. I told everyone I was going to do it so I had pride and ego to get in the way of sparking up for a bit. I chewed shit loads of sugar free gum.

I still get the odd craving now 2 years later, but compared to how superior I feel over those of you who smoke it's nothing Wink
