I graduated last summer with a joint honours degree in computer communications and business information systems degree. I have been on a job hunt ever since January and so far I have had only 3 interviews with large companies, which all resulted in me not getting the job, I don’t think I cope well with these assessment days, I know I would prefer a regular interview but they don’t seem to do those anymore. I apply for a lot of IT jobs and often don’t get many responses back. I am so fed up now that I just feel like giving up and carrying on with a boring career in retail sales. I know I lack experience but surely there is some thing out there for me?

As each day passes I seem to be losing more and more belief in myself …

I don't seem to be able to find the right words these days Chet, but don't give up on yourself.

Keep on trying and get experience where you can, even if it doesn't pay great, because you can always move on.

Depending on your skills and interest, there's shit loads of open source projects to get involved in, if you can make any sort of difference. Anything you can do, can go on your CV.

Also, have you got any feedback from any of the companies you've interviewed with ?

Had your CV checked over by people who know what they're talking about ?

Contacted random companies that might make use of you, even if they're not advertising ? I've had a few potential opportunities come up like that. Those sorts of jobs also tend to have less competition, too Wink

Don't lose faith if it's what you want to do

Hey Dave, cheers for the input, I'm not really that great at programming so open source projects might be tough but I am willing to learn. I did get feedback from one company and basically they didn’t give me the job because I got a below average score on the numerical aptitude test. Yet I deal with those kinds of calculations every day at work so I'm not sure why I am doing so badly.

Another company gave me all positive feedback, great team player, highly motivated etc, they even said I would great to have on their team yet I never heard back from them after my interview, despite many phone calls and E-mails.

I have applied for anything and everything from helpdesk to network engineer but luck isn’t on my side at the moment. I will try your approach of applying to random companies. I haven’t had my CV checked by anyone professional; if you know of anyone then I would appreciate if you would let me know.

Cheers once again.

It doesn't have to be the sort of person paid to do it, just someone who's got some experience of getting results from making adjustments. There's quite often free help at job fairs. I got a bit from one once, and used it to improve my CV. I think it helped. I certainly don't have too many problems getting interviews ... it's getting past them that's my problem. Too often I am close, but person x has <insert reason/excuse> this that you don't. One recent one I didn't get because the company went for a less experienced person and a slightly lower salary. Another recent one was down to them preferring internal applicants, although I'm now waiting to hear about a contract position (doing exactly the same thing) from them .. I'm hoping, but I'm not holding my breath. That, btw, came from a casual email to the person who interviewed me. I've not seen the vacancy advertised. A bit of dialogue with people you interview with might turn up a few additional things to go for as well.

As for open source stuff, it doesn't have to be coding. There's documentation and other stuff. Exactly what area you might be useful, depends on your skills. Artwork within the software and websites is another fairly obvious area. Some projects have got *very* average websites. If you're good at that sort of thing, it certainly can't do you any harm.

Hi Chet,
I don't know if it's something you're able to do but giving up your time to get work experience can look great on your CV. You could try asking local authorities or big companies if they would be able to give you a placement, whether it's for a few hours a week or full time for a month.
I'm not in the IT business but we quite often take work experience people on placements for 6 weeks. We give them a project for the duration and get them experience in various areas of work.

Just keep at it and the right job will be yours.... it is worth waiting for, honest!

Chet, I'm feeling particularly cynical today so I'm refraining from saying anything, but here's a link I hope stimulates your imagination

voluntary overseas

remember this dude, your a young chap, your whole life is ahead of you - are you going to be one of those who spends all of it sitting on your arse in the one place?

ok, so I said something...

The volunteer thing seems really interesting, so I will be doing my research on that. I love travel so being abroad and doing some thing like that would be nice.

Scuba I don't think I am young anymore, I’m 25 a week tomorrow and I feel that at my age I should be in my own home earning a decent wage in a job with prospects.

That is a good option. Getting about a bit can be fun I might consider that myself, too, now that I'm happier with moving about a bit.

Is that your standard, or what someone else has told you is the right thing to do ? It's not a bad thing, I'm just curious whether you're following your dreams or someone else's.

It’s my dream due, I admit part of me did my degree to prove some people wrong but once I got into it I really enjoyed it and forgot about those people I wanted to prove wrong. I’m used to a busy lifestyle I’ve always been at work or university never had the kind of time like I have now (I now only work part time). I have been told I am a workaholic but I enjoyed it and was happy at work till challenges went away.

Perhaps it’s lack of day to day challenges that are getting me down…

its what our society trains us into thinking. I for my part have pretty much always opted out. its not the be all and end all.

You Chet, ARE still bloody young! You are 18 years younger than I am. And I'm not effin old yet either Wink

Take the next five years of your life out, go travelling, see some new faces and places, learn some new language or two, have some wonderfull experiences, have some well scary ones too, make some fantastic friends!

Its a scary thought jumping, just do a little preparation...

Ok Scuba if you say I’m young then I’m young mate! Travel really appeals to me but then so does doing it in a manner that suits me. I could see myself going round the world travelling and working but it would play at the back of my mind that I would be living from pay check to pay check and that I would have nothing to come back to.
