Howdy FBer's.

got myself into a bit of a pickle, at karate tonight i well and truly over cooked a side kick, and seem to have torn my hamstring.

This is new to me and all my instructor could recommend was painkillers and a bath.

Anyone any ideas what I can/should do?

Cheers in advance

Take it easy for a few days, and dont jump back into the Karate full pelt when it feels better, take it easy for another couple of days after.

Just had a quick look on the web and it suggests a gentle massage. I was about to say that I dont know much about salts in the bath - the doctors say salt raises the blood pressure (I think they mean Tesco's Blue label though), but if you are getting a gentle massage, it might be raised anyway!

Get her to practice on your back till the leg feels a bit better then!

If it swells, you could put an ice pack on it for a bit, that will help

Your going to hate not being able to do the karate till it gets better. I know I get fustrated when I cant get out for a run - should have had 2 weeks rest with a knee problem and didnt cause I hated it, and it still niggles 5 weeks later.

Treatment of a pulled hamstring is dependent on the severity of the injury. Because of bleeding and swelling, athletes should stop their activity and rest immediately. An ice pack and compressive bandage can be applied to control swelling. Crutches may be necessary if walking is painful or if spasms are severe. If the pain is significant, or if the symptoms do not steadily resolve, medical evaluation should be obtained.
Some steps to take include:
Ice the injury
Apply a compressive bandage
Use crutches
Gently stretch the hamstrings
Massage the injured area/Seek physical therapy
Seek medical attention if:
You have difficulty walking
The pain is significant and not relieved with rest

The short answer is DRINK

Hope it gets bettre soon
You think you may have a complete hamstring rupture

prevention is better than cure so they say, not much help right now, but as you probably know, stretching and warm up helps prevent injury. if you keep getting injuries you might want to consider more stretching and a longer warm up? just a idea.

Hehe, i was properly warmed up and stretched (i have a gruelling routine) I simply pushed myself too much, i havent learned my bodies limits yet, last night i paid for it. LOL

The overall pain in the surrounding area has subsided, now it hurts horribly if i bend it, bend over, over touch it, i can walk on it so long as i dont put full weight on it or apply too much movement, but then again ive been tanked up on strong painkillers all day and have a tubigrip on it LOL

From having pulled my hamstring both top and bottom.... a good hot bath plus some freeze spray usually found in boots does the trick but do mind it for a while. A torn hamstring can take anything up to 6 weeks to heal properly!!!! Trust me I know!!!!
