Most people i know how to play House of the rising sun by the animals as their first song. Everyone likes the song so it will keep your interest and its quite easy to play =P

Accoustic steel strings are hard on the fingers so i would suggest learning on a nilon or electric. If all you have is steel accoustic then i guess u gonna have to suffer like i did ^_^

If you want to get used to power chords which feature in most songs these days then i would suggest nirvana. Their songs are easy to learn and they are catchy. You will be hooked and u will enjoy playing. their tabs are all over the internet. Perhaps even get the program GuitarPro which has a trial version that is sufficient =) it plays along with you and runs through the sheet music. Once you have power chords down then you can focus on mixing open chords and power chords, and picking/solos etc. Power chords and rhythm are the basics and probably the most important =)

I'm learning guitar too and have decided I need a couple of lessons. I think self teaching is pretty tough even with all the cool books and dvds etc.
