Home >> Advice >> How do i spot a scammer?
15.02.2011, 17:35 quote
Hi all, i noticed someone wants to meet me so i looked up her profile and she was a dark haired 30 year old and really quite attractive ( if shes real ) Mmm nice. However these were the words on her profile and it made me think " is she really a nigerian man " out on the scam? bearing in mind shes allegedly from U.K.!
HER PROFILE
I will write about itself only that I weak woman (and in a weakness is our force), well and the word «woman» speaks about yourself - romantic, tender, charming, cheerful, perceptible, emotional, and, main, I IS WOMAN WITH A FAITH IN THE BEST. Curious, I like to read is history, psychology, classic artistic literature science fiction. I love nature and all living sounds, which surround us is noise of marine surf, singing of birds in a forest, silence of enigmatic moon, soft light and crackle of fire. I love sport and conduct the active way of life pretty.
Now i may be a bit dense but it doesnt really make much sense in my dust covered walnut which i know to be my brain, which makes me think it is someone from somwhere else whos grasp of English isnt too good maybe! possibly! casting out the line in the hope that the little fishy ( me ) will swallow the hook and be caught.......Or am i just being too cautious ?
15.02.2011, 17:57 quote
Got that one too, including a visit to my page.
As a rule of thumb, I treat all uninitiated contact as a scam. Especially when they are keen to meet or include alternative forms of contact. I know I'm irresistable, but even they can't deduce that from my profile alone
Some contact attempts are genuine though but their messages/profiles sound genarally less like an automaton.

Can one be too careful, Grasshopper?
Does she look like this:
http://www.face-pic.com/pages/view_profile.php?user=Fannynan
This woman was in New York, Canada!
They moved it, right?
They (her and kissforyou) do look similar; it could be the same person; she could be 30; she could have moved to London in the 3 years since (when she found they'd fibbed about Canada!
); and she could be a teacher (but maybe not English!
) - but I still think you are right to be cautious.
Generally:
[ ] spammers approach you;
[ ] they usually leave a Facebook, or similar link;
[ ] they often include an email address ('for very nice photos I have');
[ ] the profile pic is usually very good;
[ ] the profile text (like the message) is often very poor English.
If you tick two or more, the chances are it's a spammer.

Good advice above me.
In the case of scammers to women, they are over the top romantic, always 'god fearing' usually construction workers or engineers,they always try to get your e-address in their first message and English is ALWAYS poor, as if 'lost in translation'. Pictures are models, stolen IDs or attractive men.
They might even offer to give YOU money.... but don't be fooled whatever the reason, they're still after your personal details!
If you want a partner from overseas best to go there on holiday and try to meet locals.

why do people make fake profiles and try and scam? whats in it for them? someone has sent me a few messages recently and at first i was a bit wary because i didnt initiate the contact. Now she is asking me to email her private address if i want to contact her, I think i might just be being paranoid because really what can she possibly be scamming from me? thoughts please?
15.02.2011, 19:56 quote
For a start, once they have your e-mail address they can pass it on to whoever they want, and you can get bombarded with advertising (and I mean A LOT of it!), viruses and the like.... and if they've got more information from your on line chat/messaging you'd be surprised what it can lead on to. People will pay for information.
A scammer can steal your heart, especially if you're emotionally vulnerable These can be some of the cruelest scams.I know somebody on another site that has seen that happen and now campaignes to get sites to take some responsibility, as often they don't act on reported 'scammers'using their site.
Then there are those youngsters that just glory in hacking and speading bugs just for fun......sure there are many other things may be people will share more experiences here.

How did you know it was kissforyou ??????

could it be that you ARE IN FACT KISSFORYOU lol..
Hi Gypsy hope you are well?
Generally:
[ ] spammers approach you;
Yea but i approach people too so does that mean that the reason im not getting many responses from mail is because all the good looking ladies are really thinking " Jeebus hes Soooo Hot he has to be scamming and thats why im being ignored!!!! lol
[ ] they usually leave a Facebook, or similar link;
Yea have noticed that one but its hard to tell,I contacted a lady in USA to say hello because she had been on my page and she left me her E address without even really talking...Now not too sure me thinks!.
[ ] they often include an email address ('for very nice photos I have');
That hasnt happened yet but i am new here so there is plenty of time i suppose.
[ ] the profile pic is usually very good;
Yeap that appears to be the case
[ ] the profile text (like the message) is often very poor English.
What talk bout you say so how you are doing !!! You mean kina like that lol

I Googled one part and got the woman on here and then - because they tend to cut-and-paste - I Googled another and got the American one. You'll find they reuse the same profile text and often reuse the same 'handle'. A bit of Google finds them out!
There's only one profile for me here - and this is it! Lump it, or like it!
(And I get a few liking it!
And wiseolddogforyou wouln't have worked!
You'll have to experiment with the replying. Nobody could say - without reading both posts - which were my words and which were yours. If you don't want to cut out the various bits you want to reply to, it's best to leave the whole post as a quote and just post below.
Or cut out the bit you want to reply to (as I've done) and just reply to that.
Otherwise the attributions get shot to bits and it's impossible to decide who said what.
But (you'll notice) I never said kissforyou is a scammer!
Good luck with your search. There's been a lot of topics about how to best display your 'wares'!
And what works best in the messages to women.
If you learn to use the search over there >>>
you'll be able to find them.
But getting your profile right and getting that first message right are the things to concentrate on. Then a bit of diligence and perseverance...

I received a message from a someone I thought might've been a scammer so I replied without editing any of the text from their original message. After about seven replies with the same text (that they'd clumsily put together) they thought I wasn't interested in them... My excuse: well I was bored and it's interesting to see if people read their messages.

Forget scammers, I'd like to spot the person who deleted my profile essay today which has remained virtually unaltered for 4 months, save for 2 added-in minor words.

Sometimes scammers use plagiarised photos from google. If that's the case, use Tineye. It acts as a plagiarism detector for images.
