This is something that has been on my mind for sometime now!

Let me explain a bit! I'm an exiled Scot down in deepest wurzel country I have of course made regular trips home over the years and on returning south i always feel a high degree of home sickness.

So far all that has stopped me from packing my spotted handkerchief has been my kids who live in Somerset too! and the fact that career wise there are very few opportunities for professional marine cartographers so a complete career change would be on the cards as well. Housing i don't see as a serious problem BUT i do feel that upping sticks a a giant step to make!

My responsibility to the kids effectively ends in November and i personally feel i have done my best as far as they are concerned.

I apologise for what may be a boring thread but i had to get it off my chest!

Sounds like you have to do what's best for you now. Good luck in whatever you decide.

yes have spoken to my daughter about it all..over a period of many months..she understands my situation, and the fact that i will not be abandoning her..(never would)..and she is cool with it..
Not doing this on a whim or anything, and its the hardest decision i have had to make.. but i believe its for the best in the long run..

I wouldn't worry about it.

I upped sticks to France and dumped my 3 kids directly into the French system - scared me a bit.

After 7 months they were speaking like natives and never looked back - they all now speak 4 languages, 2 at uni in Scotland after French bac and 3rd writing bac this year.

Kids are tougher and more resiliant than we think - give them a chance!
