OK, tomorrow I am giving up smoking. Been to the doctors and got patches on prescription.
Does anyone have any useful tips or ideas on giving up and how to beat the cravings?

Just try and stick with it and good luck, It's damned hard I know, I packed up 29 yeas ago, it took me 3 attempts.

I haven't got any more money though Confused

P.S I did it cold turkey.

I did however have a pack of ten in pocket at all times, and each time I went to get one I thought nope do not give in to it, that seemed to help me.

I quit smoking last year. I've had a couple of cigarettes(and I only mean two or three..when drunk..) since, but for some reason, the taste now makes me want to puke.

I gave up cold turkey. It took determination, though!

a woman i work with just quit- she downloaded pictures of lungs- healthy and effected by smoking- and put those up on the wall- along with a list of the numerous poisons in a cigarette- and what their alternative uses are- most interesting reading! (but not for the faint hearted) each time she has thought of smoking- she has looked on the wall and it has put her off.
my tip would be to start thinking like a non smoker- say it over and over if you must that YOU ARE A NON SMOKER- and hopefully the actions will follow.- good luck with it- i know it can be real hard- but well worth the benefits- more money, smeeling nicer, whiter and longer lasting teeth and healthy gums etc etc etc- all the best.

my advice would be this..

change your routines..as a smoker you end up having ciggerettes at certain periods of the day, so will be the hardest times for cravings
dont eliminate all smoking paraphenalia around you..this just emphasises that you cant have and makes the craving worse..keep some ciggerettes in house etc
dont believe patches and all other crap are your salvation..there not.
if you find yourself thinking about smoking, distract yourself with something else..take deep breathes and enjoy having cleaner lungs and the fact you are getting healthier..dont dwell on missing, dwell on how you are improving
Accept that you might fail..telling yourself over and over that you might fail and worrying about it, will proberly lead to failure..
stick something else in your mouth..lol (ice poles are good for this)
reward yourself at certain fixed periods for doing so well..
when offered a ciggerette, dont say no, i'm giving up..this just leads to a topic of giving up and how people have failed and 'oh i tried that once..'...just say no thanks, i'm fine..
think like a non-smoker.
good luck to you..

Don't give in to it Vicky, I know its easy for me to say and hard for you to do, but don't forget I have been in your position.

Maybe if you feel you want to keep telling people on here your finding it damned hard, and members and friends keep coming back to you telling you not to give up, then that may help you a littel?
