hi people i need some advice on what to do with a family member of mine.years ago he used to be outgoing always looked on the bright side of life and was happy to be around.but when he turned 18 he went of the rais all together.he suffers from seffer acne so he shut himself away from all his friends and stopped going out.he tried to kill himself by age 19 and nearly secceded in doing so.im the only one who he seems to let in to whats trobling him.he is getting help and is on anti-depressens but i dont think he is improving at all.i tried to get some of his friends to chat to him but they said hes not worth there time anymore.i feel sorry for him because he was such a lovely person to be around and now he seems that theres no point in bothering anymore with life.i try and visit him as much as possible but i have a life to live to.i hope i dont sound selfish but i need to live my own life to.i just worry so much about him and so does his parents but he seems to have lost the will to live and i dont know what to do anymore.im afraid he will try and do something stupid again.he feels everyone hates him and that he is a loser and that no one loves him.can anyone help me on this matter?

Like you've said, you need to look after yourself. No point having 2 of you disappear down the plughole.

Stick in there, but don't be fooled by attention seeking. It sounds harsh, but your friend has to get his head around being happy again. You can't *make* him happy. His brain is caught in an inward looking spiral of negativity. He's gotta look outwards, find some distractions, and seek the positives instead of dwelling on the negatives.

CBT worked well for me.

Contact Social Services adult care department and make them aware of the situation.

He really needs professional help, like counselling. If you are that afraid of what he might do, then I suggest that you tell social services about your worries. You dont have to say who you are if you prefer. But I definitely feel he needs to talk on a one to one basis with someone who is separate from his homelife.......
I do this with younger children and young adults, so please get him the help he needs, he is unable to help himself as you know..Good luck and I hope he starts living soon!!!!!!!! you too!

Blah79,

Now i dont know the law, more specifically, the law regarding the mental health act. But speaking from experience, if someone is a danger to themselves, then various departments can step in (If anyone knows different, please say)

I said speaking from experience...
It was the BEST thing that happened to me. Even if i didnt realise at the time. And i thank MY family for what they did, i know it was unbelievably difficult for them.

Its good that he lets you in...But sometimes you've got to be "cruel" to be kind..
