Home >> Advice >> Dont ever buy anything online wi visa card :(

I ordered some footie gear for my team on my visa debit card back in august through what looked like a very reputible internet company called sport centre direct.my total bill came in at just under £600.I was assured in my reciept that i would recieve my order within 14 days at the latest. After going 6 wks without my order i decided to cancel on 30th sept.I have more or less spent the best part of two months trying to recover a cheque from this micky mouse firm but to no avail they never return emails or letters and when i phoned i always got passed around. It now seems after talking to a few other people that this company disband quiet a bit only to resurface under a different name in a few wks.
I recieved a letter from a london liquidation firm saying that the company had went under.I was told that due to my order being placed under debit rather than credit card that it will be a tall order to get my money back. What i would like to know from anyone is is there another avenue i can take like citizens advice to recover my money?

Certainly go and see citizen's advice, but he is right - if you had used a credit card then the credit company would be liable to give you your money back.
I'm afraid I don't know what you can do in relation to purchases from a debit card.

When you loose money due to dealing with a bankrupt company write a formal letter to the people who are dealing with the insolvency, stating your loss.
They are trying to work to a set of priorities and they may (just) end up with some cash for you.
However head for the Citizen's Advice first, making sure that you understand how your local branch works out who they will see at on any given day.

Scott I am sorry, thats a real bummer.
Yes sadly a lesson learned the hard way, never ever use your debit card like that, credit cards are covered, debit are not.
Also, if someone were to hack into either your computer or the company's data base, you could find your bank account totally emptied, along with a whacking overdraft.
Thats what happened to me, not online, but my debit card got fraudulated, some peeps here may remember when I lost a lot of money and ended up with an unauthorised overdraft of just over £1,400 and I never got a penny back.
Definitely only ever use a credit card online!

Sound advice there RG....I think any transactions over £100 are covered by the credit card guarantee. In saying that, I woud never be able to use my debit card for the amount of money Scott did cos there's never that much in it!!!
In my experience Scott, I don't think you have much chance of getting your money back as you will be at the bottom of the list of creditors. Its a sad fact of life that even if they do start up under a new name, you have no comeback on the new company either. There are so many people and companies out there that use this avenue and theres nothing you can do about it
