No apology needed Nig. That's frequently what it's like. As for getting a grip on it, for those that have a cause, it can be done, but unfortunately many sufferers have a chemical imbalance and there doesn't need to be a cause or a 'trigger'.

I know for myself there's frequently a 'trigger'. Sometimes it only takes a word. Most of my depression is learned behaviour (tho' unfortunately not all). Therapy/counselling etc can be a great help there. For those that do take medication or have been recommended it and don't like it, think about how you would treat a migraine. You'd take something for it!! Mental health is the same (in some respects). Don't be afraid of taking whatever help you can.

Glad you are coming out of the dark redoctober. I agree that no one should worry about taking the medication. My GP monitored me very closely whilst I was on medication and that in itself made me feel better. I am lucky that my depression was reactive rather than clinical so therapy was very successful for me.

I study with the OU too, in my 5th year of a social sciences degree. What are you studying?

for those that suffer due to a chemical imbalance, my heart goes out and should (this is all just opinion) take medication. ... however, (again an opinion), all too often it is too easy to try to patch up problems of a spiritual/psychological nature by prescribing medicine rather than trying to address the root of the cause. i personally have little faith in western medicine to cure things that they don't really understand.

Um... unfortunately due to having a really bad couple of years with far too many negative events I went over the edge a little while ago and my doc will no longer prescribe anything. Embarassed Crying or Very sad Thankfully it was a one off Embarassed ... so back to counselling for me.

I'm doing a science degree Vivizara. Only in my 2nd year. Do you ever use the forums? It'd be spooky if we'd 'met' there somewhere too Very Happy

I've looked into various other forms of help Nig but just can't afford it. I have to rely on the fact that I'm normally a pretty strong person. I got accused recently of making a mountain out of a mole-hill. How wrong that person was. Mole hills I can deal with.. 2 or 3, or even 4 not a problem.. but when you got so many come at you in one go they pile up enough to resemble a mountain!!! Had my little flip a few months ago and steadily working my way through the mole hills. I've realised that bashing the ruddy moles on the head before they start on the hill often makes a big difference Wink Very Happy

You obviously know very little about depression Magno. Sufferers of Bi-polar frequently work themselves into the ground, then have periods where they are too exhausted to do anything. Many 'artistes' (pop-stars, actors etc) seem to suffer this and it's the 'up' side that keeps them going. I could rant loads on this subject as I know it all too well, but I won't!

Be sure you know your subject before you dismiss it so easily.[/quote]

just been reading through this thread and thought i would post this website address up..

Thanks 53846. I have mild bi-polar, but it's easier to call it depression, 'cos lets face it, when I'm not rushing around like a loony, I'm as depressed as hell!! lol or should that read as 'a miserable moo' Wink oh, and I use humour a lot to work through it all Very Happy

the only description i could give for depression is it's like being in a cave when u know it's bright outside but u can't stand the sunlight. u can keep busy in this cave if u want, u might even forget u're there for a while,

Is'nt strange i was on tranqusilisors for four years suffered on off that time, you are right each person is different. At times i was up at five doing housework all day, at other times i would sit for days watching videos constent! I know why i got like i did but it did'nt help knowing, the only real time I got serious help was when I told the nurse at the doctors that I was wanting to kill myself.(no sign of weakness no sign of getting out of the state i was in) This was no hollow threat I did want to having my son stopped me, it was the worse period in my life!. But luckly its been over a year(off pills well tranq anyway) and I now want to life every day to its full. I now feel to waste a day is a crime, does that sound silly. Finding this site has helped so much, people just don't know how much they help. Sorry for this another dave rant Embarassed

We are all individuals whom experience simular symptoms. No two people experience the same feelings. Depression is an illness and to many people cast judjment on others. wheres the compasion gone to ? Its a chemical imbalance within the brain that causes the mind to withdraw. I've been on medication now for several years and have found this, unhelpful.Doctors and phyciatarists have just fobbed me off never seeming to help. I;ve literally had to beg for help @ times, i just find life impossible @ times. If the people who seem to think depression is just an escapism , actually experience the true feelings of suicide maybe they might have a change of heart!!Well enuff of my drivel , JUST REMEMBER THIS.... THERES ALWAYS SOMEONE OUT THERE WORSE THAN YOURSELF!!"!

For sometime now i have been in the throws of stress and depression! i am on medication, probably drinking too much for my own healths sake and my zest for life is fading! In other words i have no enthusiasm for anything, even the basics are becoming hard work for me! I feel the weight of the world on my shoulders and wonder if i will even see that faint light at the end of the tunnel! All i seem to get is some git bringing me more hassles!

I have reached the bottom of the well! retreated totally into my cave UGH UGH! i don't want to see people and trying to be myself and i mean the true me is hard work! I have even had those dark thoughts too! This is not self pity i feel low and have been having dark thoughts as well!

Just been catching up with a few threads and read the above.

Hi redoctober, I can see how you’ve interpreted my statement and I didn’t mean to dismiss depression at all, so please accept my apologies since that’s what you thought I was doing.

The post you quoted was in response to Kalamity’s initial issue of finishing Uni and feeling a sense of emptiness and bordem about what life holds next. I was just offering lighthearted advice on what helped me through a similar situation when I left.

I certainly wasn’t claiming to offer advice on true depression! The comment was made within the context of the thread at that moment in time and not amied at everyone in general.

In fact, as soon as Ringer mentioned a serious case of depression later in the thread, I immediately admitted how people don’t understand the subject in the very next post in order to show respect for any such condition.

I understand you probably just took my first comment as a general opinion and felt the need to respond due to your personal experiences, but as I said in my next post I do respect that it’s a much deeper subject as this thread has clearly shown.

Thanks for that polite reply Magno. It's probably more than I deserve considering how heatedly I jumped on your original post Very Happy

You show a much greater understanding than I gave you credit for at that time.

I hope you can accept my apology. (sorry! no handshaking emoticons available )

It's ok redoctober, I completely understand why you quoted me due to your experiences - just wanted to reply and clear things up. Smile

I've certainly learnt a lot from this thread and you seem like a really great forum member - I've enjoyed reading many of your posts!

One thing I like about this forum are the real life experiences people are bringing to the table; this thread is a perfect example. I should be around here more often.
