19.09.2008, 06:50 quote
Do you sleep through the day?
If so stop it.
Do you exercise regular?
If not do so.
Do you eat a healthy balanced diet?
If not do so.
Are you solving problems or performing mental agility before bed?
If you are stop it.

Insomnia runs in my family and i've suffered from it for many years. Best way I have found to fix it is by going out all weekend without sleep then that makes me more tired during the week. Plus that means I get to have more fun at the weekend
19.09.2008, 08:55 quote
Do what both of then say and you should get a good nights rest during the week AND have a wicked weekend.

dr reckons its down to the hours i do at work and stress but if you knew me you would know i am the least stressed out guy in the world lol

Insomnia is a lot about anxiety, you get into bed and expect to have trouble sleeping. So what happens? You have trouble sleeping. The fact that it 'runs in the family' doesn't help as it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Work doesn't have to be that stressful to affect sleep, but if you are thinking a lot about what happened during the day or what you will do tomorrow it can really effect your sleep patterns. So try to leave work at the door of the office and pick it up again when you come in the next day.
As Snaith said exercise is important - even if it is talking a walk for half an hour everyday it will help you to be more rested when you go to sleep, but don't do it just before you are going to bed as your body will be all worked up.
You need to find a way to get yourself as relaxed a possible before you go to bed. Listen to some soft music, have a warm milky drink - not tea of coffee as that will wake you up again. I find that if I shut my eyes and concentrate on breathing deeply I can be off in the land of nod in no time.

Here's a tip I once learnt for getting into lucid dreaming... It failed to get me to lucid dream, but it always manages to get me sleeping. Anyhow, for what it's worth...
I might have said this around here before, so sorry if so... On an insomnia topic too, anyway...
If you lie down still with yer eyes closed for about 20 minutes or so, the brain will believe your body is asleep. Then it will start on sending messages like itches and such to see if the body is still awake. And then if you keep your mind on for enough, you're supposed to be able to enter a dream.
I once managed to enter one, but that was the only time...
Thing is... After the 20 minutes of lying down completely still... You get as tired as heck. Trust me on this one.
You could also use some relaxation tapes... I've got one called "Anxiety relief" on which a lady speaks you into relaxing all of yer body into a very pleasant state.
These two things are sort of boring to do, but they do work.
So all the best. x

I used to have trouble sleeping, but not as bad as this. I basically just imagine myself in relaxing situation's, like having a bath. Having incense burning help's too.
When I was younger I saw someone about not sleeping, they made a tape for me going through various different exercises, but I cant remember them all, so I'm not much help there. Perhap's it's worth seeing someone, other than your doctor.
A freind of mine had alot of trouble, she was advized to move a mirror she had facing herself at the end of her bed. It's feng shei. It worked for her, this was years ago, and I havent heard her complain of it since.

I always have probs sleeping, been an insomniac since i was born, i find the most helpful thing for me is to have the tv on (usually a dvd that im really familiar with) and if i try to listen to whats going on (instead of trying to go to sleep) with my eyes closed i eventually fall asleep without even trying
19.10.2008, 10:34 quote
i found it quite simple to overcome.
First off, stop thinking about everything that happened during the day. lay on your bed, close your eyes and think of something calm ( blue sky, the sea etc).
Next up is a breathing regualtion trick, long deep breathes, space them out untill your breaths are perhaps 15 - 20 seconds apart. after a few minutes your body will relax and you will drift off to sleep.
It's always important to clear your head before you even think about going to bed and even more important.. don't lay there thinking.. "why can't i get to sleep" because all that does is stimulate your brain, making it take even longer still before you can get to sleep.
hope it helps ! sorted me out ! ![]()

A good search term for insomniacs to put into Google is "sleep hygiene".
People have already touched on a lot of the major issues here but this is the term that academics and doctors use for this kind of advice. Essentially you make your bedroom and your bedtime routine as supportive of sleep as possible.
I personally try to keep a complex reference book by the side of my bed to read before I drop off. This allows me to complete some of the more demanding books that I wouldn't read otherwise and to distract myself from any nagging doubts or worries.

I used not to sleep well at all - which I think was stress related. It was when I was at school, which I hated, and got much better when I left. An irregular sleep/awake pattern also causes problems. I also find that I get the most satisfying sleep after hard physical exercise. Drugs and alcohol are usually a bad idea as you gradually become more dependant on them.
