Oh Id avoid paracetamol if I were you, they block certain receptors that break down the alcohol by-products!

They do?!! Blimey, works for me every time, tho' it might be the reason my stomache tends to be a bit delicate the next day. Tho' I'd rather have a delicate stomache than the kind of throwing-up type headaches I get otherwise.

yup honest, plus they are quite harsh on the stomach lining aswell. I did read a paper on the paracetamol thing I said about, but I cant remember where I found it, Ill have another look for it though.

A huge vodka and coke....failing that...take the day off, take your covers through to the living room, lie on the couch and watch loads of DVDs. Turn your phone off too.

If you get so pi**ed that you know you're gonna have a hangover then best is to drink plenty of water and have a wizz before you crash, sleep as long as possible and do nothing the next day - usually works for me.
The big FEB (full english breakfast) is definately a good option if you can stomach it, probably best at about 2.30pm, then spend an hour or two doing something dull like surfing the web, or watching UKTVhistory, then head back to the pub for the evening. Of course if you gotta go to work in the morning, mid-week, with the mother of all hangovers then 'tis advisable to just phone in sick and install yourself on the couch with chocolate and daytime tv.
Failing those options and you HAVE to go to work or do anything that requires any level of involvement, I recommend a big glass of fresh orange juice, or a big carton of any mixed fruit drink (as we used to call it 'shape-up-juice'), and some kind of complex carbohydrate mixture like some toast with peanut butter, or an egg and bacon butty, and strong coffee (not tea, thats a myth about it having as much caffiene) or if you prefer it, an energy drink. Allow yourself at least 20 minutes for it to take effect, even if you're gonna be late, it's better be to late and 'with it', than on time but wasted Wink

Caffeine is a diuretic, surely you want to be conserving and redressing the balance of fluids and electrolytes, not pishing them away even more.

Also caffeine is sometimes called "theine" when it's in tea. . Theophylline is present only in trace amounts. It is more diuretic, more toxic and less speedy.

Caffeine
1,3,7-trimethylxanthine

Theophylline
1,3-dimethylxanthine

Not a massive difference chemically speaking. An extra methyl group on carbon 7 for caffeine, and only 2 methyl groups on theophylline on carbon 1 and 3 only..

And Theophylline is found in very small amounts in tea, but has a stronger effect on the heart and breathing than caffeine. taken from "Principles of biochemistry", Horton and al, 1993.

However coffee contains less caffeine than tea when measured in its dry form. The caffeine content of a prepared cup of coffee is significantly higher than the caffeine content of a prepared cup of tea.

And the metabolism and 1st order of kinetics of its eliminiaton is pretty interesrting, well it is to me anyway.

cheers jackalope, you seem to know your chemistry, and my 'coffee more caffeine than tea' statement appears to be supported! ....but your post methinks just edging towards to TMI...lol...you don't know a decent plumber by any chance do you?

Yeah youre right on the caffeine content of tea vs coffee, but only as a wet product, not in dry weight. So remember that bit if you need to argue it again!
