on the flirtbox.net website it doesnt quite work...the costs for hosting the website (not even including the work) are not covered by the advertising revenue.

the flirtbox.co.uk website has some decent revenue to cover the webservers i need for hosting this and other websites (a couple of hundred pounds) that have hardly any revenue.

but once I take the amount of time and programming into account, this it a loss-making "business".

the worst thing is, I cant even go on holiday without having a hotel room with dsl and to check the website 2-3 times a day......that's why I havent been on holiday properly for quite some time.

If I did some software development during that time instead, I would be better off...but that's what I do all day anyhow......

Instead of looking for "better" dating sites, why not think about what you are looking for and how you imagine your ideal dating site and post it here?

I think this is the only dating site where you really have an influence and many things that have been suggested where also implemented in the end...sooner or later..such as this forum for instance.

i am interested in getting as many people on the website as possible of course - but not because of the "money" through advertising, just because it is more fun the more people are on the website.

Of course you have more advertising revenue if you have more traffic, but you always reach a step where the costs of running the website increase or double.....e.g. sooner or later one server is not enough..then 2 servers are needed so you have twice the expenditures....then you need 3 servers etc....and everytime you change the server you need to install all the software and move the domain names...configure the mail server etc....
additionally you have problems with broken hardware etc...so there is always a lot to do and the amount of work increases with the amount of hardware and people...the more people the more support requests etc....

And this is just the technical side......last year I probably spend 5 days alone on other issues.....
Gosh, thanks Toby Very Happy That's the problem when you're ignorant of the facts (who? me?!! *whistles innocently*). I had no idea of what's involved in something like this, so it's interesting finding out more (even if I don't understand half of it )

Don't worry yourself lev. You've not started anything untoward. Believe me, this is nothing Wink Infact, seeing as Toby doesn't mind, I will mention that I met my fellah through Plenty of fish, but part of the reason I don't mind mentioning it is cos I actually think it's shite!!

it is currently number 5 of all uk dating sites including the non-free dating sites accordings to the statistics. number one is loopylove in the uk, but it is bloody expensive.

now and then new ones are cropping up quickly but then disappearing again as they run out of money for advertising the website or because they come 5 years too late...

there is another one currently (which i dont mention) that received lots of money from venture capitalists....but they make lots of mistakes and I am sure they run out of money soon, too. i dont think it is that easy to pay for office rent, employees...even the software development by an external company...and at the same time make a profit without ripping people off.

some dating sites dont even require a valid email address when you register, then they pretend to have 235,000 members although 180,000 of them never logged in again...as they were just setup as additional profiles by the same members....on flirtbox you can register but you cant contact anyone without confirming your email address....and profiles of people that have never been active are automatically deleted.

i also keep an eye on other dating sites and already have good ideas for the relaunch...whenever that will me. whenever i test other dating sites and I found out stuff you dont want to know (e.g. when you use sometingsecret@domain.com as an email that you never used anywhere else and suddenly you are spammed with all kinds of emails).

The worst thing on pay sites is that you receive mails saying you have a new message...when you login you need to pay to read it...and in the end it was a fake message...

The psychological factor is that people are always tempted to think "if it costs so much money, it must be good" or "if i dont spend 100 pounds on this website i will never find someone"......but that's bullsh*t...and that is also the reason why "premium" dating sites are full of desperate men with lots of money...or with lots of debts.

Toby, how well advertised is this site? I'd never heard of it till yesterday, and that was only by accident that I found it. Tbh at first I was a little put off by the name, I thought it would be some sort of shag fest, but I joined anyway and obviously liked the look if it Smile I really liked the all the tick boxes that come up when you join - you know, for music etc, I thought that was a great feature.

it is not advertised...anywhere.

i started with that (flirtweb.co.uk and internetflirt.co.uk was it called before for some months) in 1999.

At that time there were only 3 dating sites as far as I remember...all of the were cheaply done AND bloody expensive......

the early you start with a site the easier it is.

Imagine you wanted to compete with Ebay or youtube now - impossible.

The earlier you start with a website the better - the later you start the harder it gets. Nowadays you would need 1,000,000 for advertising to get it started.....and even then people might stop coming to the website once you dont advertise it anymore.

Many people come to the website regularly for a couple of years and check out new profiles...they sometimes do that for such a long time now that it belongs to their "internet life" the same way as google.

Sometimes people have a relationship or get bored...but come back a year later again...or some months later....

i know that other dating sites are getting more attractive with more features....and i know I have to "upgrade" the website sooner or later...but on the other hand there are many website such as plentyoffish that are done in a really cheap way but are still popular.

(plentyoffish is more popular among people from the usa though.....)

anyway...enough for now...

Don't think I've ever seen it advertised actually. It was a friend that recommended it. She's been with the guy she met from here over 8 months now

Yeah but how does anyone find it? From the searches I did, it popped up quite by accident.

If you need a hand with any of the technical stuff..drop me a line. I spent most of Friday rebuilding a hacked server for someone and have done quite a bit of web coding Smile

There are a couple of websites Ive registered on, and got bored with that are free.

Flirtbox is the best I thinkl because you know you are writing to real people and dont get spammed

The others seam to be full of people living outside the UK, american and russians (russians, living in the UK in Liverpool, Strathclyde - a mark of a scammer when they cant get basic facts right), or the search isnt very good, so basically I would say this is the best on free one. There is one that is OK but there are few members in my area, and no discussion board.

Some websites offer a free couple of weeks, OK if you can write to everyone in that time and give out e-mail address to carry on a relationship.

But my mind is that whatever is on the internet, there should be someone who is willing to offer the information for free (and who is single is information)
